Newborns and Chiropractic Care: What Parents Want to Know

It is the first question almost every parent asks, and usually with a raised eyebrow: You adjust babies?

Newborns and Chiropractic Care

It is a completely reasonable reaction. When most people picture a chiropractic adjustment, they picture something forceful. Understanding what an infant adjustment actually involves tends to change the picture entirely.

At Lawson Family Chiropractic Center in Canal Winchester, Dr. Bethaney Lawson cares for patients at every stage of life, from infants to older adults. Here is what care for the youngest patients actually looks like.

Why Anyone Would Check a Newborn's Spine

Birth is the first significant physical event of your child's life, and it is not a gentle one.

Whether delivery was quick or long, vaginal or by cesarean, assisted with forceps or vacuum, or entirely uncomplicated, your baby's head, neck, and spine were subject to real forces on the way into the world. Add positioning in the womb during the final weeks, when space is tight and options are limited, and it becomes easy to see why a newborn's spine is worth a look.

Parents often bring their babies in after noticing things like:

  • A strong preference for turning the head to one side

  • Difficulty latching on one side but not the other

  • Discomfort when lying flat, or a preference for being held upright

  • Arching, fussiness, or trouble settling

  • A visibly tilted head position

  • Uneven flattening of the skull, often related to a persistent head turn

  • Irregular sleep patterns

Chiropractic care does not treat these conditions directly, and Dr. Lawson makes no claim that it does. What she evaluates is whether your baby's spine is moving and aligning properly, and whether restoring that motion helps your child be more comfortable.

Gonstead Chiropractic for Newborns: How Gentle Is It Really?

This is where the specifics matter, because the answer surprises most parents.

The pressure is minimal. An infant adjustment uses roughly the amount of pressure you would use to check a ripe tomato at the grocery store without bruising it. It is applied with a fingertip. There is no popping or cracking sound in most infant adjustments, and none of the forceful movement people associate with adult care.

No twisting, no rotation. Gonstead adjustments are low amplitude and high velocity, delivered with no rotational forces driven into the body. For a newborn, this is the whole point. There is no turning or torquing of the head or neck.

One segment, not many. Rather than adjusting multiple areas of the spine, the Gonstead system analyzes the whole spine to locate the primary subluxation, the specific vertebra that actually needs attention, and addresses that one segment through a precise line of drive. Nothing gets adjusted simply because it is there.

It takes seconds. Many babies sleep straight through it. Others cry briefly, more often because they were placed on a table and would rather be held than because anything hurt.

What Happens at the First Visit

A detailed history. Dr. Lawson will ask about your pregnancy, the delivery, and what you have been noticing at home. She will also ask what your pediatrician has said, because your baby's medical care belongs with your pediatrician and she wants to work alongside it, not around it.

A careful examination. Her Gonstead analysis includes:

  • Visualization of how your baby holds and moves their head, neck, and body

  • Instrumentation with the Nervoscope, which detects differences in skin temperature along the spine and involves nothing more than a small instrument gliding alongside the spine

  • Static and motion palpation, a light hands-on evaluation for tenderness, swelling, and restricted motion

No X-rays. Full-spine X-ray analysis is part of Gonstead care for many adult patients, sourced through a trusted imaging partner. It is not used for infants.

An explanation before anything happens. Dr. Lawson will tell you what she found and what she plans to do before she does it. You will stay right there with your baby the entire time. Many parents hold their child during the adjustment.

Honest answers about fit. If Dr. Lawson does not believe chiropractic care is appropriate for what you are describing, or if something needs your pediatrician's attention first, she will say so.

What Chiropractic Care Is Not

This matters enough to say plainly.

Chiropractic care is not a treatment for colic, reflux, ear infections, or any other medical condition. It does not replace your pediatrician, your well-child visits, or your child's vaccination schedule. Those decisions belong between you and your child's physician.

Seek medical care immediately for a fever in a newborn, difficulty breathing, poor feeding or dehydration, extreme lethargy, or any symptom that worries you. Trust your instincts, and call your pediatrician.

What chiropractic care addresses is spinal alignment and motion. That is the scope, and Dr. Lawson stays within it. Newborns and Chiropractic Care

Why Parents Choose the Gonstead Approach

The Gonstead system is one of the most specific approaches in chiropractic. Its foundation is the understanding that maximum balance and stability in the spinal column are achieved when the pelvis, vertebrae, and legs are level, and that misalignment, restricted motion, and nerve dysfunction are all worth evaluating together.

For parents, the practical appeal comes down to three things: the analysis comes before the adjustment, only the segment that needs attention is adjusted, and the adjustment itself carries no rotational force.

Dr. Lawson graduated with honors from Sherman College of Chiropractic and has completed more than 500 hours of advanced Gonstead training. She also acts as a wellness coach for the families she serves, offering practical guidance on positioning, tummy time, carrying, and the daily habits that support healthy development.
